    James Stewart calculus?
    Hey Internet,
One of my former students is at UW this fall, wants to know if it's worth buying all the ancillary stuff that goes with James Stewart's calculus textbook for their Frosh calculus class. Advice?

    life is good
I don't even know the last time I posted in here. It has been so long that I had to upload new userpics before I could post, because the last ones were so outdated.

    Life is good.

We have been very busy. I am now 3/8 of the way finished with my final year in pharmacy school. My next rotation is at the VA in Eugene which could be exciting. I'll have to dust off my practical skills.

We are going to move into CoHo any day now with our good friends the Kimdons and Loyal and Suzie.

Caleb is a big, active toddler who is fun to be around every day. The last 6 weeks were my "off block" so I had a chance to spend a lot of time with him. We went to the library on Tuesdays and gymnastics on Fridays and Andy takes him to soccer on Saturdays. Yesterday we rode on a tractor to the pumpkin farm to get pumpkins and he went through a hay bale maze and had a great time.

My sister got married this summmer. I went to my 10 year high school reunion and hope to catch up with those folks some more at some point.

We have met a lot of wonderful people with CoHo and in other areas of our lives. It is sometimes hard to keep up with everyone we would like to!

Andy is teaching high school again. More science and engineering and less math. I'll let him tell all about that.

Life is good. Somewhat crazy, but good.

Wow, well where have I been for the last two months? Turns out two months is about the length of a term of school- 10 weeks in fact. Last week were finals, so I'm back! - temporarily at least until classes start again...

I feel like I've grown a lot in the last few months. Perhaps I'm becoming the person on the inside that I have portrayed on the outside. I am becoming more confident and more sure of myself. Ironically, more ready to say, "I don't know." Part of it is that I am learning more and more about my field. The more I learn and the more I practice, the more I can help. Working at the hospital has been very good for me, even if it means spending a weekend day away from the family. It is hard going to work on Saturdays because it is one of the few days everyone else is home. The other part is that I've taken a class in NVC- Non-violent communication and it has helped me in many ways. I am more aware of my feelings and spend less of my time ruled by guilt. I am becoming more like my father who I greatly admire and respect.

Life continues to go well. I have two terms left of classwork and a year of internships starting next summer, so my last summer as a carefree college student is over. Spending time with Caleb and Raine is a joy. Everyone told me they would grow up fast and I believed them, but I didn't understand. A year ago we were excited that Caleb could walk, now I wish he would slow down and when he runs into the street my heart thuds into my throat and I move faster than I knew I could. He likes to help around the house- which generally takes longer than if I did it myself, but not longer than if he was actively working against me, so I let him help quite a bit. He is starting to talk in "Caleb-speak" which is related but not identical to English. All in all, he keeps us busy.

I'm sure there is much more going on, but I won't bore you. I am going to get christmas cards out this week, so if I don't have your address and you would like one, please send me your address- either as a comment or to my e-mail address: myfirstname.mylastname@google.com . And if I don't write again before then- Have a very happy holiday!

    wow, it's been a while...
Life's been great. Busy. Hectic. Sometimes stressful. But great.

We moved into a house with [info]kuddliphish and [info]maxemulien and their wonderful daughter Raine. Living with them is like no cohousing experience I have had yet to date. Perhaps it is because we are all parents, perhaps it is because we are all older, perhaps it is because [info]kuddliphish is so grounded and [info]maxemulien is such a hard worker, but it is a really nice arrangement. We eat a home-cooked meal nearly every night- we used to have back-up-pizza far more often than we do now. We share kid watching and chores.

Andy taught me that it is not a competition and household chores do not have to be fair and I think we've taken that to heart in this arrangement. It is more about accomplishing the tasks needed for the day, then doing my share of the work. On the other hand, I'm happy when I am able to contribute to the group- I like to cook for my "family." I like to make sure the floors are (relatively) clean so the kids don't eat off of them and the kitchen is put away so that we can make breakfast in it the next morning. I guess I'm saying I'm happy with the arrangement.

I've been reading this book, "How She Really Does It: secrets of the stay-at-work mom" which has been very good for me. I needed to know that there were other Mom's out there struggling with the same things I was. The guilt and even worse- the pride. I think it has shown me that it is okay to be proud of what I am doing. I am doing a lot and I AM proud of myself.

Caleb is crying... I've gotta go... more later.

    interview advice?
So, a good friend of mine* has a phone interview tomorrow. He's a CS graduate who like me spent awhile after graduation finding himself- in his case teaching English in Japan for two years.

He's got a phone interview tomorrow with Symantec; the job is workign as part of a team training technical support folks. He's trying to prep for questions they might ask. He's pretty thoroughly competent but has never had a job in tech support before.

Since he spent yesterday watching Caleb for us, I'd love to offer him good advice. Anyone? Buler?
    (replies greatly appreciated).

*really (it's not me). Only after I typed this did I realize that I too could work with people over the age of eighteen... hmmm....

    Bike Ride!
Today we rode our bikes (with Caleb's trailer) to the farmers' market, then took a detour home through campus, a covered bridge, and a park. On our way there, the folks rebuilding the roadway stopped traffic so the bikes didn't have to share the one lane with cars. Yaay bikes!

    EE
That's Electrical Engineering, not e.e. cummings.

Would any of you out there consider yourselves electrical engineers? I'm taking a (pretty neat) workshop this week and next running through the "Principles of Engineering" curriculum I'll be teaching next year. Yesterday and today we built robots out of Fischertechniks kits (way fun), next we have to do a report on a field of engineering; I was assigned electrical.

Anyways, if possible we're supposed to interview a practicing engineer in the field and ask them some questions. Any volunteers (or does anyone want to volunteer someone else?). It's not a 'gotta do it' thing, but it would make the presentation more interesting. Let me know if you're willing.

You Know You Need Unique New York
So, I'm going on a flying trip to New York at the end of this month. I fly in to Mahopac, NY on Sunday June 25th and fly out the following Thursday evening (June 60). During the day (8-4:30) I'll be in class, but I have no idea what to do with the rest of my time. My entire East Coast experience consists of a recent fun weekend in Boston and trips to DC and Florida many years ago.

What should I do on my evenings off?
    1:55 pm
    All done
My living room coffee table looks like a salad. They are power washing our apartment building so I had to bring all my plants inside. It's kind of cool really. I can't wait until I have a real garden...

Oh and by the way- It's summertime!!!!

    Cohousing update
We just got back from breakfast and a tour of the property with the cohousing group which prompted me to think about things and so I'm writing a full report ) I welcome any questions.

    Update about cohousing
So, we just got back from our first meeting of the cohousing group. It was, as expected, a very welcoming environment. It is hard to say objectively what I think, but if you want a gut feeling, it was wonderful. There were approximately 25 people there representing most of their membership. It was so friendly and I really liked the people I met and if this were a "game group" or some other group of people I could see myself becoming friends with them very easily. Read more... )

Today I am amazed at how much Caleb has grown in the past few weeks. He has really become a "little person." Recent accomplishments )

I only have 9 school days left!! I have a lot to do, but summer is coming so soon... and I start my new job next Tuesday... AND my sister offered to babysit tonight, so Andy and I are going to go on a much needed date, so it is not all work and no play. :)

Cohousing- with a cut ramble about James Alan Gardner, much to my suprise
Today was a very busy day. Why does it seem like I have more and more of those these days?
    Hmmm....

We went to Andy's ultimate game yesterday and one of his teammates (a hippy-granola-crunchy-probably-from-Eugene* teammate) had a pin that said "Ask me about cohousing" So I did. It turns out there is a group in Corvallis that are putting together a community. I am interested. I am worried they may be more hardcore granola-crunchy than I am. I am sort of borderline granola-crunchy. I can cook without meat, but I'm not a vegetarian. I recycle/reduce/reuse, but I don't wash my plastic baggies. Y'know.

The other exciting news is that provided I can pass a drug-test (tomorrow) and background test, I have a job! Eight hours a week from now until I get my pharmacist license (next two years or so). The job is at a small, newly remodeled/remodeling hospital pharmacy. And I get to keep my other job! (at a local chain retail pharmacy) And I can do my internship at the hospital! And it is in Lebanon which is about 17 miles away! I am so excited.

*I put that in there just for you [info]pmb and [info]goteam. ;)

Edited post posting because I forgot to do it pre-posting which meant there were 100 mistakes. Or a few less than that. ;)

    12:13 pm
It has been quite a week or two. I've had lots of things I've wanted to post, but other priorities. Today I finally have a moment to sit and drink my coffee in the sunshine- at least for another 15 minutes. Here are some things I have been thinking about lately and may or may not make a post about in the future. If any of them look interesting, let me know and I will bump them up on the list... )

In other news, I got a call from HR today...

    success!
I had a job interview yesterday and am very confident that I now have a job. No papers have been signed, but he strongly implied that HR would be calling with paperwork. Besides, I rocked the interview! He walked me outside and then we stood around talking for a bit, then we shook hands, then we stood and talked a bit more. It was fantastic. I was thinking about it and I don't think I have ever been turned down for a job IF I get an interview and turn in an application*. I am GOOD at interviews.

In other news, we are starting to get our summer planned. Andy has a few workshops he is attending in farflung parts of the world (New York and Southern Oregon) and I am therefore going to spend some time with our parents (I am not a single parent and do not want to be a single parent- I am going to go to Grandma's house for back-up).

The best thing about the job I interviewed for is that it is every other weekend, which gives me a lot of time during the week to travel. Now it is 7:00 and I had better get a move on so I am not late to work!

*I interviewed at Fred Meyer last year, but never got around to turning in an application. Suffice it to say, I got a rejection letter, which I thought was funny since I never applied.

So, I'm thinking about entering the beautiful baby contest on our local country radio station. Good idea, bad idea?

If I did I would use this userpic for the picture. Good picture, bad picture?

    Cleaning
I finally cleaned enough that I found my seeds! I knew it would happen eventually. I swept and mopped the kitchen floor and cleaned the bathroom and when I returned to the kitchen to put the chairs away, I found my seeds- behind the coffee pot! Wouldn't you know? - I can't even blame Caleb for that one. I probably stuck them back there- "to keep them safe."

I've been thinking about cleaning a lot today as I've been cleaning- I like cleaning better when you're cleaning in a group. I sort of miss ABL cleaning days. I can't wait till Caleb is a little bit older and we can have "family cleaning days."

I'm also doing a TON of laundry. I'm borrowing my next door neighbor's washing machine, since ours went kaput. That is nice, because I don't have to lug all my laundry down to the coin-op laundry room. I think we are going to buy a front-load when we move. I have been thinking a lot about moving today too. I hope that someday I am happy enough in my house that I don't want to move every year. I'm sort of tired of moving every year, and yet right now I am SO ready to move. This place is getting smaller all the time. Or else we are getting more Caleb toys every day.

For example- Caleb used to have one basket of toys in the living room and one in the bedroom as well as a basket of books. Now he has two baskets in the living room and toys stacked up all around them and his book basket is overflowing onto a shelf in the living room. Amazingly he still enjoys playing with my junky-left-over-boxes and going-to-be-a-craft-one-day stuff more. Ah well. I s'pose, speaking of Caleb I should go pick him up from daycare now. I got a lot done today and now it is the weekend!
